When I first showed up as a communications manager at TCFV, the only camera in the entire building was an old cannon poweshot with a one-inch display and about 15 minutes of solid battery life. Even though we had quite a few photo-worthy events we had very little in the way decent photography to document the agency’s efforts. I lobbied the higher-ups for money to purchase a decent and began shooting every event possible. Why this has lead to the need for additional file servers (RAW files are not small) the agency now has a broader base of photography to pull from and relies much less on free stock photos.
I’ve photographed marches, fundraisers, trainings and all manner of situations where people sit in a circle and talk to each other. The most moving photo was at TCFV’s silent witness event, where victims of domestic violence are remembered at the Texas Capitol. A vicitm's daughter sat underneath the silhouette memorializing her mother and spread rose pedals on the capitol steps, just as the sun started setting.
